So, Instagram appear to have made quite a substantial change to their iconic logo… and not everybody appears happy about it.
On 11th May the official Instagram blog announced the new look, stating the design is “inspired by the previous app icon, the new one represents a simpler camera and the rainbow lives on in gradient form.” When you consider how significant the visual platform has become since its 2010 launch, it’s not surprising that the design team fancied a little branding clean up. This is not the same software we first encountered six years ago, and the same can be said for its community.
As expected, people on social media were quick to brandish their pitchforks, declaring the logo as ‘garish’, ’stupid’ and ‘a f**king disaster’ – heck, the venom didn’t stop with words, hence the existence of satirical GIFs like this one:
Although the colouring is reminiscent of something found on Microsoft WordArt circa ‘98, the logo has a charming simplicity about it that’ll no doubt become synonymous with the brand. As you may have noticed, it’s not just the main logo which has received a refresher, but also the companion apps Boomerang, Hyperlapse and Layout which follow suit in terms of colour palette.
If you’re hankering for the old retro style logo already, fear not, as the community has already found a way to revert it back. In fact, Tech Times have kindly published a wee guide on how to change the logo back to its former design on iOS.
